In the final race weekend of 2016, ArmsUp Motorsports closed out the Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship powered by Mazda season in the best way
possible with Brazilian driver Victor Franzoni. The team finished at the top of the charts in every session of the weekend, earning its second and
third wins of the season.
The Wisconsin based team worked diligently to set up the #9 single seater, open cockpit car for the opening practice
sessions, both of with Franzoni dominated. The 21 year old finished both practices at the top of the charts with ease, commending the crew on the
excellent set up for the two liter machine. Seemingly, without a care in the world, Franzoni entered the qualifying session confident in his team and
his car, and set the fastest lap of the session in lap six of his 11 lap run, earning pole position for race one.
“Qualifying was
great,” said Franzoni. “ArmsUp gave me a car that was so good. It was like I was out there, just driving around with my
girlfriend.”
Smooth sailing continued into race one as Franzoni led the field to green and immediately pulled away from the pack in the
opening corners. For the 40 minute race, Franzoni stayed out front, pulling further and further away from the field with every green flag lap.
Crossing the finish line with almost 13 seconds of clean air behind him, the young Brazilian earned his second win of the 2016 season.
“It was the best race of my career,” said Franzoni. “The car was really easy to drive. I could push when I wanted to push, and
just continue to drop my lap times. Normally, I have to fight a lot during the race, but this time, I just drove and we won. It was
awesome.”
Starting race two again from pole position, Franzoni’s second race of the weekend followed similar suit as he pulled away
from the field in lap one. With every lap, he increased the gap over his competitors, winning the final race of the year by 10.10 seconds, securing a
third place finish in the final championship standings.
“This is exactly what we came to do this weekend,” said Franzoni.
“It was a full points weekend for us, and a great way to end such a good season with ArmsUp Motorsports. I’d like to thank ArmsUp for
everything they did this season, and Mazda and Cooper Tires for what they do for us drivers. They help us a lot. I hope to be around next season, and
with ArmsUp would be even better.”
“We couldn’t be happier with how this weekend went,” said ArmsUp Motorsports owner
Gregg Borland. “To end the season on such a high note is exactly what we wanted, and we’re looking forward to immediately getting to work
on the new car and off season testing. We’re working hard to build an even stronger program for next year.”
In the coming weeks,
the team will take delivery of the new cars for the 2017 race season, the Tatuus USF-17. While the 2017 schedule has yet to be announced, the coming
months will be filled with many hours of testing and development with the new car, in an effort to prepare for the upcoming season.
